Gowns in this tradition originated in Scotland early in the nineteenth century and became an important commercial industry throughout the British Isles. Customarily the bottom of the v-shaped decoration was joined to a long skirt in a straight line for a girl; here the triangular piece overlaying the seam may have been added for a boy. There are mid-century Ayrshire christening gowns with an opening in the seam so that the triangle could be worn in or out depending upon the baby's sex. By the end of the century the decorative v-shaped yoke evolved into a series of lacy bands and pin tucks that extended the entire length of the gown
